The existing building is 14,250 square feet. The addition is nearly 20,000 square feet. A total of 34,425 square feet when the project is complete. The average size of a public library in Michigan serving this size of population is 33,530 square feet.
What’s new is what you’ve said is needed: separate teen space from preschooler space, a social space where conversation is encouraged and groups can meet casually, a quiet reading area for adults, a youth program room so that meeting room and small meeting rooms are free for other uses, and a drive-up book return and pick-up window. There’s also more seating, lower adult shelving for light and ease of reaching, and more shelving for adult fiction and children’s picture books.
